Welcome to Locomotive 110's restoration website. This steam locomotive is a testament to old-fashioned ingenuity and craftsmanship. Using many of those same techniques, we hope to fully restore 110 back to full operating condition.
This is a project of the North Carolina Railway Museum and the New Hope Valley Railway.
The North Carolina Railway Museum (NCRM) operates the New Hope Valley Railway over a portion of the old Durham and South Carolina Railroad in central NC.
We pride ourselves on being an educationally-focused living railway museum, providing our guests with a hands-on railroading experience. Our museum includes locomotives, rolling stock, an historic depot, and a garden railroad for your enjoyment.
The Vulcan Iron Works Steam Locomotive fits perfectly within the NCRM mission. She spent the vast majority of her working life supporting a cotton mill in western North Carolina. Locomotive 110 played an essential role in getting raw materials to the mill and then finished products back out to the mainline for outside distribution. The goal is to restore her to full operating condition.
Individuals, businesses, and foundations can all help us restore 110! Please contribute your time or money through:

Our mission at the North Carolina Railway Museum is to educate the public about the importance of railway history. Through live and static exhibits, we aim to:
Railroads played a critical role in North Carolina, allowing easier shipments of goods and services to and from rural communities. Travel became easier. The railroad depot often became the town gathering place while folks waited for the mail trains to arrive. Locomotive 110 played a part in this history, pulling trains to deliver goods and services in rural western North Carolina for 30 years. The train became an integral part of the community (see Stories). Her 100th birthday is just around the bend in 2027!
We at the museum know firsthand that the sights, sounds, and smell of a live steam locomotive is a unique experience for our visitors. It helps to stir the imagination and take you back to a bygone era that few of us experienced firsthand. By sharing that legacy, we hope to inspire a passion for history and innovation in present and future generations.
The restoration of the 110 steam locomotive is in excellent hands. The steam department at the North Carolina Railway Museum (NCRM) has a diverse crew of steam locomotive experts who are very experienced at all phases of restoration, maintenance and operations. All told, the team has over 100 years of experience with live steam! We also have connections to an extensive network of steam experts and enthusiasts from across the nation. We work to mentor interested younger members into the department to carry steam expertise into the future. Our training program includes learning to fire a locomotive as well as all aspects of maintaining one. Once mastered, the candidate will then be promoted to engineer. Number 17, shown in these pictures, has been a great training locomotive for teaching steam operations, maintenance and restoration.
There's much to see here. So, take your time, look around, and learn all there is to know about us. We hope you enjoy our site and take a moment to drop us a line.
